Default Jumping

So. Let's talk about jumping. Techniques, styles, timing, legality, etc.

First, I wanted to talk about illegal jumps. Our ministry gets called on it occasionally, but others (like Summit, or more specifically, Riven) have totally illegal jumps that are never called. Why is this?

Let me start by saying that I really don't like the leg jump. Frankly, it's slow. It has become popular because it's easy, not because it's the best.

That said, I completely disagree about the legality of the jump. The rules say that the quizzer must "rise to full stature in one continuous motion". The suggestion that you cannot move your leg and at the same time start to move the rest of your body is preposterous. Can you jump illegally with a leg jump? Of course you can. You can jump illegally with any jump. But you can do it legally too.

I don't recall how you jumped but I don't remember having any question about whether or not it was legal.

I agree on the point of the leg jump. I believe it is completely legal to do as long as the quizzer stands up when they raise their leg off the pad.

Yes, you can do a legal leg jump. Some teams (like Believers) do it completely legally. But I really have to say that the way some of the quizzers do it, it is bordering (or totally is) illegal. I think Caleb Monnington was one of the worst. He would lift his leg, wait a second, then rise. We have it on video.

My jump has never been challenged. I don't do anything even slightly fancy. I basically just stand up. Or lean to the side.

It is interesting. James Gossell, the best quizzer of the last two years, did nothing special with his jump, but obviously he was an amazing jumper. Hm...

Right. As long as they stand up right away. I'm saying that they don't always do this...

If he's doing that then you're right, that's not a legal jump. I'll watch him this next quiz. If he is doing that I'll let him know. He won't continue it intentionally if he knows he's doing it.

Yeah, the thing about the leg jump is it's very easy to do it in a questionable manner even if it's unintentionally. You kinda' have to watch yourself to make sure you "stay legal."

Well, that's what it seems like to me. It could be, though, that I get frustrated because they win on jumps a lot.

Filibusters seemed to be doing this too....

So... I looked at the video again. I guess saying that he sits for a full second is a bit exaggerated. It is actually very close. I will say that it doesn't look like one fluid "continuous motion". I dunno.

Note, though, that Caleb is NOT the only one who does this. I don't wanna seem like I am picking on him or anything.

Personally, I don't have a HUGE issue with it. I just think, if you aren't gonna call people on it, why have the rule?

I think they should just get rid of it.

I agree with pretty much everything on this thread up to this point. Getting rid of the rule will pretty much make it so you can jump anyway you want, and that doesn't solve the problem, it makes it worse. If you want to do something about it you'll have to challenge jumps more often (I think most people don't do it because it feels slightly obnoxious, especially with younger quizzers) or make the rule more strict and specific.

Hm... Actually, I think you're right. Getting rid of it won't solve anything. But yes, it should be modified, I think.

You can't challenge a jump. That could be (should be but most QM won't do it) a technical foul. There are very specific rules about what can be challenged, and the opposing team's jump is not one of those things. You can bring it to the QMs attention but you cannot challenge it.

Oh, yeah. I remember that. My coach last year talked to Riven about there jumps.

*Facepalm*

I would not have done that.
